But while the paid version is inexpensive, it feels stripped-down, and you can get more from Bitdefender's rival paid app for $5 less. If you're just looking for malware protection, you can't really go wrong with Kaspersky Mobile Antivirus's free tier. There's no Wi-Fi network scanner and none of the privacy tools that other Android antivirus apps now offer. Paying users get automatic scans of new apps, an app lock and blocking of known phishing websites. Free users get call filtering, Wear OS support and a strong set of anti-theft functions, but you have to scan each new app manually. There are no ads in the free version, and not much nagging to upgrade to the paid plan. Kaspersky Mobile Antivirus, also known as Kaspersky Antivirus for Android, offers nearly-perfect malware protection, a small system impact and a call blocker that actually works. The best Android antivirus app on a budget Read our full Avast Mobile Security review. Since the stand-alone price for SecureLine is $60 per year, paying an extra $20 on top of the premium Android antivirus tier for unlimited VPN data is not a bad deal. The built-in client for Avast's SecureLine VPN is just a tease, and the only way to use it is to pay for an Ultimate tier. Users of either paid plan also get additional anti-theft features, an app locker and tech support. Those ads go away if you pay for either of Avast Mobile Security's paid tiers, Premium ($2 monthly or $20 yearly) or Ultimate ($7 monthly or $40 yearly). (It's since been removed.) And the free version's ads and constant nags to upgrade are annoying and intrusive. Some of Avast's anti-theft functions didn't work for us, and its call-blocking feature didn't work at all. While Avast's malware protection is good, it's far from perfect. ![]() The Bank's sole shareholder is the Co-operative Bank Finance plc. The Bank is now a plc with debt securities listed on the London Stock Exchange. The Customer Union for Ethical Banking have expressed their desire for the bank to return to co-operative ownership in the future. Following restructuring and the formation of a new holding company on 1 September 2017, the Co-operative Group no longer owns a stake in the bank and the relationship agreement between the two organisations ended in 2020. The Co-operative Group, which had previously owned the bank outright, became a minority shareholder holding a 20% stake in the bank. The financial impact resulted in the bank's previous owners, private households across the UK, losing control of the bank, while US Hedge Funds funded the recapitalisation and absorbed the loss's equity. It was a private transaction and thus avoided the part-nationalisations that befell larger rivals in UK, USA and elsewhere in the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. This swap successfully reduced the bank's liabilities while increasing its ability to withstand the significant losses which had rapidly become apparent. This avoided outright losses for the creditors, insolvency of the society and the collapse of the bank. The move reflected the fact that they could not be repaid with cash on hand, but provided them with ownership stakes in the bank, and therefore a share of any potential future profits. Representatives of the bank's then 12.6 million co-owners and management at the time dealt with a crisis by negotiating with creditors to exchange their claims on the bank's liabilities for equity in a debt-for-equity swap. In 2013–14, after a merger with Leek based Britannia building society, a failed attempt to buy a larger rival and a troubled commercial property loan portfolio, the bank was the subject of a rescue plan to address a capital shortfall of about £1.9 billion. It also campaigned against tar sands oil extraction, and accepted votes cast by women co-owner members some fifty years before wider women's suffrage in the UK. It introduced fee-less accounts – personal bank accounts without a monthly fee – now a mainstay of British banking, but unusual globally. The bank was an early pioneer of branchless banking, allowing customers to use the telephone, and later the internet and mobile phones to access money, rather than visiting a physical branch. " and maintained full and later partial ownership until 2017. That society, The Co-operative Group, maintains some relationship with the bank today, including managing the licensed use of the brand name the "Co-operative. In the 1970s it was registered as a separate PLC that was wholly owned by the co-operative society it was part of, in order to achieve its status as a bank among other banks entitled to use inter-banking systems. ĭespite its name, the bank has never been a cooperative itself. The Bank does not provide banking services to organisations that conflict with customers’ views on a comprehensive range of issues, for example: human rights, environmental stability, international development and animal welfare, or those involved in irresponsible gambling or payday lending as stated in its ethical policy. The latest Values and Ethics report was published in May 2020. The Ethical Policy was revised and expanded in 2015 in line with over 320,000 customer responses to a poll. The Ethical Policy was introduced in 1992 and incorporated into the Bank's constitution in 2013. The Co-operative Bank is the only UK high street bank with a customer-led Ethical Policy which is incorporated into the Bank's Articles of Association. ![]() Branches for residents of the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands were closed in the 2010s during a significant rescaling exercise. I don’t have anything to hide either, but I don’t like “snoopers”. I think my new cyberspace “best friend I can trust” (besides TC and EB) is Disconnect Search. I found both articles interesting and informative, but just couldn’t connect the dots. Thanks for the duckduckgo clarification, too. I never would have made the VPN/Disconnect Search connection on my own. Left my eyeballs spinning and bouncing like pink pong balls in my skull. I read the VPN article, then did a search and ended up reading about OpenVPN at Wikipedia. Thanks TV for making the connection for us. Private isn’t really private at all.Ĥ thoughts on “ DuckDuckGo and Disconnect Search” Unfortunately, to the sites you visit, to the search engines you use, and to your ISP, private browsing doesn’t mean anything. It doesn’t store files on your computer nor keep a history. ![]() ![]() Chrome has it (Incognito), IE and Firefox has it – so why not just use private browsing instead of something like Disconnect Search or DuckDuckGo? The answer is simply this: Private browsing is only private it to you. But I bet that the people who say they don’t care who sees what they’re doing online, have curtains or blinds on their living room windows, even though they’re doing nothing but watching TV or reading.Īnd a little overview about so-called private browsing. I am certain those who claim they’re not doing anything wrong, would not like people watching them through the windows of their homes even if they were just reading or watching TV. Those who say they have nothing to hide and don’t care what their ISP records are actually encouraging the continuing erosion of our individual rights to privacy. Where they sell it in the aggregate (most likely) or by customer (not likely) it’s valuable stuff and valuable stuff tends to get sold. In my opinion, it’s only a matter of time before they start selling this information to advertisers and companies who want to sell us services or things. I really don’t think most people understand that ISPs record everything their customers do online – and how long they keep this information varies from ISP to ISP, but you can be assured it’s for a period of years. Your ISP has no business knowing what you’re doing on the Internet, any more than the gas company has any business knowing how you’re using the natural gas you buy from them…or the electric company needing to know how you use the electricity you buy from them. So it’s different and even more private than DuckDuckGo - although using DuckDuckGo with Disconnect Search, would be excellent □ This will not, of course, circumvent NSA surveillance □ but hopefully, none of us have to worry about the NSA. If that server keeps no records or logs of your access, then your privacy is pretty much assured. When you’re using a VPN all your ISP knows (and logs) is that you are connected to a VPN server in Miami, but - assuming the VPN server keeps no logs - the trail would end there and anything you did (searching, downloading, etc.) would be seen only by the VPN server. So you may appear to be from Los Angeles, when you’re really in Miami…or London or, Papeete, Tahiti (like EB). Your true IP address is changed and all your ISP or search engine sees is the Virtual Private Network IP address. ![]() Disconnect Search ( see our article here and in the tips section of this newsletter) creates an instant VPN connection when you search, regardless of your choice of search engine. Am I correct? If not, how do they differ in function? Apparently, Disconnect Search will make other search engines operate like duckduckgo. The shroud is kept in the royal chapel of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, northern Italy. ![]() In 1898, on the reverse photographic plate of amateur photographer Secondo Pia, who was allowed to photograph it while it was being exhibited in the Turin Cathedral. The image is much clearer in black-and-white negative There is no consensus yet on exactly how the image was created, and it is believed by some to be the burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth, despite radiocarbon dating placing its origins in the Medieval period. The Shroud of Turin or Turin Shroud ( Italian: Sindone di Torino) is a length of linen cloth bearing the image of a man who appears to have suffered physical trauma in a manner consistent with crucifixion. John Iannone makes a convincing case that the Shroud of Turin is, in fact, the authentic burial cloth of Jesus Christ – Lord and Savior. It is like a spring that murmurs in the silence, and we can hear it, we can listen to it in the silence of Holy Saturday.” In conclusion, Mr. Especially that huge stain near his rib, made by the blood and water that flowed copious from the great wound inflicted by the tip of a Roman spear. Every trace of blood speaks of love and of life. “The Image impressed upon the Shroud of Turin is that of a dead man, but the blood speaks of his life. In the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. There is no record of “ Crowning With Thorns” having been a part of the typical Roman crucifixion ritual other than that of Jesus Christ recorded for us in the Gospels. ![]() In addition, the Shroud of Turin shows that the man had a cap of thorns pushed down onto the top of his head. The Shroud of Turin is almost certainly the burial of a man written in blood the blood of a man who was tortured, scourged, crowned with thorns, crucified and whose right side was pierced. Scientists are unsure of how the image was formed, but it seems to have been made by a short and intense burst of light or radiation. The Shroud of Turin is not the only ancient burial cloth to have been found and studied, but it is the only one ever found to have an image impressed on it. It is currently kept in Turin which is located in Northern Italy. Microscopic pollen particles indicate that it also spent time in Edessa, four hundred miles north of Jerusalem, Constantinople, and France. ![]() The remarkable presentation highlighted various aspects of the mystery of the Shroud of Turin including the forensic, or scientific evidence which suggest that the Shroud of Turin has its origins in the area of Jerusalem around the time of Jesus. Iannone’s book attempts to gather the evidence to make the case that the Shroud of Turin is, in fact, just that. The Shroud of Turin is thought by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus, and Mr. Reverend Father John Ringley gave an outstanding talk to an enthusiastic crowd of 178 people based on the book and slide show by John Iannone entitled, The Mystery of the Holy Shroud of Turin: the Case for Authenticity. All of the characters are deeply broken and, while they are absolutely not lovable, they are UNBELIEVABLY COMPELLING. When I say this is dark, I am NOT kidding, but it's more emotionally dark (except for Mara's graphic kidnapping and leaving for dead) than anything else. It actually may be my favourite book of hers because it doesn't move as quickly as the Brutal Birthrights or Underworlds so there's time to flesh out and develop the transition from uncaring to obsessed, while maintaining the coldness that is completely paramount to the MMC. Sophie set this one up beautifully, ensuring that the relationship (whatever it might actually be) between Mara and Cole feels earned, particularly given Cole's own lack of emotion. Unlike many other readers, I didn't find this story slow to start at all, but I think that's largely because I went in expecting the beginning to set the stage for rival serial killers, which would ultimately lead to spice. One night, in an effort to shatter Cole's careful control, Shaw kidnaps a woman who caught Cole's eye and leaves her just dead enough to tempt Cole he leaves her for dead in the barren minefield, but, through sheer determination, she manages to escape and find help, leading to a dark story of obsession, sex, and murder. Cole Blackwell is a gorgeous, renowned artist who has a.dark passenger, shall we say (props for those who get the Dexter reference, I'll be here all week), and a severe rivalry with Alastor Shaw, a fellow artist and the Beast of the Bay, a brutal Ted Bundy-esque killer. Let me begin by saying that There Are No Saints is DARK. I have read almost every book that Sophie Lark has written and I am also fine with that fact. I am officially down the rabbit hole of dark, forbidden romance and I am perfectly fine with that fact. I am gonna read the next book but I’m not sure if I’ll finish it. With everything I’ve said I did like this book but just the last few chapters I started to get irritated and tired of it. Little things started to annoy me and within the last few chapters i found myself rolling my eyes constantly with her. I found that she thought too much of herself, she would act like a fragile girl one second and then the next she was trying to act tough. Mara, female mc.The way her art was described I don’t think I would’ve liked it tbh. His art that was described I found that I would’ve loved to see them irl. Yes he’s a stalker and a killer but there’s just something about him something addicting I fell in love with him more within each chapter. The little spice that was in it was okay.Ĭole, male mc. There were spicy scenes but not as much as I would’ve thought and would’ve liked tbh i was a little disappointed with that. ![]() The pictures of the art they were talking about were nice to see but then always the image of them in the scene that was being described I found I loved them. The plot is good and is addicting because it’s like you need to see what happens and even tho I guessed a little of it, it still surprised me. I can't wait to see what the second duet book has install for us!!!įrom reading the blurb itself it sucks you in. This is the exact reason I read for these kind of books. The connection and chemistry between Mara and Cole is unlike anything, Cole is a guy that always is calculated, puts on different mask around people and thinks before he does anything, but he loses all control whenever he is around Mara. Cole is someone who doesn’t have any feelings but he is experiencing something he hasn’t before when it comes to Mara. There is this charm about him that everyone is attracted to and Sophie has a way of drawing you into him. Cole gives me very much Joe vibes from YOU, he was an interesting character and was very interesting to get inside his head. She has created this character who is a literal serial killer, an anti hero, but there is something about him that draws you in and find something redeeming. She has somehow written about these characters so well and in so much detailed that words cannot describe it. It's all you could want in a book and more. This book has everything in it from suspense to dark romance to mystery. When I read the first few chapters of the book I was genuinely shocked with how well written it was and I just had to keep reading. It was amazing! It's one of my first Sophie Lark books and her writing is just phenomenal, the way that she writes it makes you feel as though you are emerged in the book and you just get lost in it. This is probably one of the best books that I have ever read. ![]() The interior styling is kept clean and simple. Unfortunately, all that space is surrounded by cheap, textured hard plastics. I found lots of headroom for my 5’10” frame. The first thing I noticed was how roomy and spacious the cabin feels. It’s no fly-weight, but it isn’t a porker either – in this trim, the heaviest it can be with automatic and all-wheel drive, it tips the scales at 3,254 pounds. During my week with it, driving through rutted, icy, crappy roads, mostly slow commuting and not paying attention to being economical on the gas pedal, I saw the Trax return 9.8 L/100 km (24 mpg), which is reasonable. It is rated at 8.7 L/100 km (27 mpg) in the city and 6.5 L/100 km (36 mpg) on the highway. So yeah, definitely more suited for those “city adventures” than the off-road ones.įuel economy is quite good. It’s built on the same platform, but is definitely upscale. If you like the general shape, but prefer different things styling-wise, you could also check out the Buick Encore. Overall, I didn’t find it an offensive shape, although I wasn’t particularly fond of it either. I have seen pictures of the larger wheels that come on the LTZ trim, and they definitely look better than the ones on this LT. I appreciate that Chevy kept the lines clean and relatively simple. The rear flanks are pushed out to the sides a bit, so there’s some definition from the rear fenders and back. It looks like the rear end got squished a bit as, visually-speaking, there is very little vehicle behind the rear wheels.Ĭhevy’s corporate snout can be found in the front, the horizontal trim bar splitting the grille. It is an interesting looking thing, to be sure. Speaking of appearance, the exterior styling is definitely the most polarizing aspect of the vehicle. It sits high off the ground, and the shape is top-heavy, giving it a bulky appearance. To put it into perspective, it shares its platform with the diminutive Sonic. ![]() You can still move up a notch to the completely loaded LTZ trim level. They start at $18,495 – my LT trim with the optional sunroof comes in at $30,250 – everything in. The Trax begins at the affordable end of the vehicle spectrum. Let’s talk some numbers first, and then we’ll get into the vehicle itself. Chevrolet advertises it as “the perfect partner for your city adventures”. The Chevy Trax is a different take on things. |
